Many writing teams simply worked with the tools that they had, overcoming obstacles as they came, and doing their best to write the finest stories possible for Nightcrawler. Ideally, this will mean there will be no more retcons, no more shocking revelations, and no more mysterious relationships. It is great (and frankly long overdue) to finally get an inarguable, concrete piece of information detailing exactly where Nightcrawler comes from. As convoluted as it may seem to the casual passerby, deeper research reveals that Nightcrawler’s origin has long since been marred and muddled by conflicting ideas meant to rectify decades worth of confusion. With X-Men Blue: Origins coming this November, fans will finally (hopefully) be treated to the real origin story of Nightcrawler.

As having an openly gay couple was taboo during that era, Claremont had to ditch the plot of having Mystique being both Nightcrawler’s mother and father due to her ability to shapeshift.
